▌Project Overview

As barcodes and standardized products fill our daily lives, we've quietly lost touch with food in its truest form, and with the land it comes from. In Taitung, we find a gentle answer: the past is the future. This island's most biodiverse corner has never chased uniform yield or industrial output. Instead, generations of indigenous communities have lived by a deeper logic, one of reciprocity, patience, and coexistence with nature. As we move toward a better tomorrow, what we may need most is to return to this "Taitung way": a resilience born not from speed, but from deep, unhurried belonging to the land.

This exhibition takes the supermarket, the most familiar space of modern consumption, and turns it inside out. We've kept the form, but replaced the soul. What fills these shelves is not processed, decontextualized merchandise, but living fragments of Taitung's landscape. Each product becomes a proposal for a different kind of future: one where every choice to return to nature is also a choice to reconnect with the earth we share.

▌Program Description

In this Future Supermarket, Taitung’s unique products are presented across five “terroir shelves,” each organized by how they sustain everyday life:

the Staple Zone, rooted in climate resilience;

the Wild Greens Zone, shaped by seasonal gathering;

the Spice Zone, reimagining flavors of the table;

the Energy Zone, nourished by ocean currents and monsoon winds;

and the Fruit & Fermentation Zone, where time slowly transforms ingredients.

 Each zone reflects the knowledge built through long-term coexistence between people and nature.

Visitors enter with a shopping basket, becoming active gatherers—following aromas, tasting freshly prepared dishes, and engaging with the vitality of each ingredient. At checkout, instead of a bill, they receive a “Terroir Receipt” recording seed stories, maturation time, and simple cooking ideas, and can continue this way of living at home through selections by local farmers and an online platform.
