Centered on regional regeneration, cultural empowerment, and international co-prosperity, the “Marine Base” is being established in Taimali Township, Taitung County. By revitalizing the Paiwan people’s oceanic knowledge system, the project seeks to address gaps in marine culture and ecological conservation in the region. Building on recent efforts such as the revival of traditional plank canoe culture on Lanyu (Orchid Island), along with increasingly active exchanges with Austronesian regions including Palau, Tahiti, and the Philippines, the Marine Base is envisioned to operate at an international scale. Signature events—such as ceremonial canoe welcoming rituals—will serve as impactful platforms for cross-cultural exchange. By inviting Austronesian partners and Indigenous communities to participate, the project aims to elevate Taitung from a regional cultural hub into a key international center for Austronesian cultural exchange. |
